The Fiscalina Valley - The Most Beautiful Valley in the World?
The Fiscalina Valley – In the Most Beautiful Spot in the Most Beautiful Valley in the World
Luis Trenker, the famous South Tyrolean mountaineer, actor, and director, described the Fiscalina Valley as the "most beautiful spot in the most beautiful valley in the world." The mighty peaks of the Sesto Dolomites, the untouched alpine meadows, and the almost magical silence make this place something truly special. Luis Trenker loved this place. And anyone who has been here will understand why.
But words and images can only capture a fraction of what truly defines the Fiscalina Valley. It is the soft murmur of the Fischleinbach stream, the golden light on the mountain peaks at sunset, and the sense of freedom when you stand high above, gazing into the endless expanse.

But is the Fiscalina Valley truly the most beautiful valley in the world? Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but anyone who has ever hiked through this alpine dreamscape will never forget the fascination of Val Fiscalina. The perfect harmony of untouched nature, breathtaking views, and a unique play of light makes this place a true jewel of the Alps.
Fiscalina Valley – The Hidden Gem of the Sesto Dolomites
The Fiscalina Valley is a small but spectacular side valley of the Sesto Valley in South Tyrol. It begins in Sesto/Moso at an altitude of approximately 1,350 meters and stretches about five kilometers southwest to the Talschlusshütte (End of the Valley Hut) at 1,548 meters. From there, hiking trails continue into the Altenstein Valley, to the Zsigmondy Hut, or via the Büllelejoch and the Büllelejoch Hut to the Three Peaks Hut. This is also where one of the spectacular Dolomite High Altitue Trails runs – the Dolomite High Trail No. 5.
Its untouched nature is what makes the Fiscalina Valley so special. The Fischleinbach stream winds gently through the valley, which is surrounded by dense forests, lush meadows, and steep rock faces. Particularly striking are the peaks of the Sesto Sundial: Cima Nove (Neuner), Cima Dieci (Sextner Rotwand), Cima Undici (Elfer), Cima Dodici (Zwölfer), and Cima Una (Einser), which dominate the sky like a giant natural clock. Additionally, you can enjoy a view of the Punta dei Tre Scarperi (Dreischusterspitze), the highest peak in the municipality of Sesto.

In summer, the Fiscalina Valley is a paradise for hikers and mountaineers, while in winter it transforms into a fairytale snowy landscape – perfect for cross-country skiers, ski tourers, and snowshoe hikers. Despite its popularity, the Fiscalina Valley remains a place of tranquility, far away from mass tourism.
From the Fiscalina Valley to the Three Peaks: Challenging but Unforgettable
In addition to its impressive scenery, the Fiscalina Valley is the perfect starting point for tours to the Three Peaks. A breathtaking route leads over the Büllelejoch, the highest accessible pass in the Sesto Dolomites, directly to the Three Peaks Hut. From there, the famous view of the north faces of the Three Peaks opens up. This route is considered one of the most spectacular hikes in the Dolomites and offers unforgettable panoramas.
Even though this route is more demanding and strenuous than the classic hike from the Auronzo Hut, every single step is worth it. While most visitors reach the Three Peaks via the heavily frequented toll road, the path from the Fiscalina Valley over the Büllelejoch offers a more natural, quieter, and more impressive approach to the famous Dolomite massif. Here, you are in the heart of the mountains, surrounded by rugged rock faces and spectacular views – completely away from the hustle and bustle of day-trippers.
Upon reaching the Three Peaks Hut, you are rewarded not only with the iconic view of the north faces but also with the feeling of having truly earned this moment. The scenery feels even more impressive when reached after a genuine mountain tour – an experience that burns itself deep into your memory.

Hiking in the Fiscalina Valley: Routes for Every Level
The Fiscalina Valley is a place where nature can be felt in its purest form – a valley that winds gently through blooming alpine meadows, accompanied by the sparkling Fischleinbach stream, while the mighty peaks of the Sesto Dolomites tower into the sky above. Whether you want to take a relaxed stroll along the valley floor or climb high up to the rugged rocky landscapes – the Fiscalina Valley has the right adventure for every hiking soul.
From easy leisure trails to challenging summit tours, the Fiscalina Valley offers a variety of routes that make every step an unforgettable experience. Anyone who has set out on these paths will absorb the beauty of this valley deep within – with every step, with every breath.
Here are three particularly rewarding hikes in and starting from the Fiscalina Valley:
1. Leisurely Stroll to the Talschlusshütte (Easy, approx. 1 hour one way, 2 hours round trip)
For those who want to enjoy the Fiscalina Valley at a peaceful pace, the walk from Sesto/Moso to the Talschlusshütte is the perfect choice. The wide, gently ascending path leads through a fairytale landscape of sparse mountain forests and blooming alpine meadows, always accompanied by the bubbling Fischleinbach stream. After just a few steps, a wonderful sense of serenity sets in – the stress of daily life fades into the distance.

At the Talschlusshütte, hikers are greeted by an idyllic resting spot with a panorama reminiscent of a postcard: gentle alpine meadows in the foreground, with the steep rock faces of the Sesto Sundial towering above. This moment is best savored with a plate of South Tyrolean "Schlutzkrapfen" (spinach-filled ravioli) or a hearty "Brettljause" (snack platter), before heading back along the same path. The entire tour takes around 2 hours.
3. Challenging Hut-to-Hut Circuit to the Three Peaks Hut via the Büllelejoch (Difficult, approx. 5 hours one way, 7–8 hours as a round trip)
For experienced mountain hikers, the tour to the Three Peaks Hut via the Büllelejoch is one of the most spectacular routes in the Dolomites. From the Zsigmondy Hut, the trail continues to the Büllelejoch Hut (2,528 m), the highest refuge in the Sesto Dolomites. The ascent is demanding, but with every meter of altitude gained, the landscape opens up further – until you finally reach the Büllelejoch pass.

Up here at the Büllelejoch, the world seems to stand still. Your gaze wanders over rugged rocks, deep valleys, and a play of light and shadow that shifts with the time of day. The path then leads down to the Three Peaks Hut (2,405 m), where the famous view of the Three Peaks opens up across the north faces – a sight that leaves every hiker spellbound.
2. To the Zsigmondy Hut via the Altenstein Valley (Moderate, approx. 3 hours one way, 5–6 hours round trip)
For those wishing to explore the Sesto Dolomites further from the Fiscalina Valley, the hike from the Talschlusshütte to the Zsigmondy Hut (2,224 m) is a great choice. The route leads through the picturesque Altenstein Valley, which creates an almost surreal backdrop with its gentle meadows and rugged rocks. While the ascent is moderate, a new, breathtaking panorama unfolds after every turn.

Once you arrive at the Zsigmondy Hut, you feel as though you are in another world. The view stretches far across the peaks of the Sesto Dolomites, and the mountain silence gives this place a very special atmosphere. It is well worth taking a long break on the sun terrace with a steaming coffee or a cold "Radler" (shandy) before heading back down the same way to the valley. Total duration of the hike: approximately 5 to 6 hours.
There are two options for the return journey of this hut circuit:
- Back the same way (Total duration: approx. 10 hours): Returning along the original path.
- As a round trip via the Piani Lakes (Bödenseen) and the Talschlusshütte (7–8 hours total time): This variation leads across the Lange Alm, then past the picturesque Piani Lakes (Bödenseen), before finally descending back into the Fiscalina Valley. This descent is gentler than taking the direct return route.

But the Fiscalina Valley is not only a paradise for hikers – via ferrata enthusiasts will also find plenty to enjoy here. The Sesto Dolomites offer a variety of spectacular via ferratas that provide breathtaking vertical views and unforgettable experiences. Especially rewarding is the Alpini via ferrata around the Three Peaks, which leads through impressive rock landscapes. You can find more information here: Via Ferratas in the Sesto Dolomites.

Magical Moments in the Fiscalina Valley: Unforgettable Experiences and Highlights
There are hikes that impress – and then there are hikes that burn themselves into your heart. The Fiscalina Valley undoubtedly belongs to the latter category. Here, it is not just about spectacular landscapes, but about the feeling of being part of this unique natural world.
The Fiscalina Valley is more than just a hiking destination – it is a place that stirs the emotions. The imposing peaks, the untouched nature, and that very special silence make every tour an experience that resonates. Anyone who has been here takes away more than just memories; they carry with them a longing to return someday.
The first glimpse into the Fiscalina Valley
The first glimpse into the Fiscalina Valley is a small experience in itself. Anyone starting at the parking lot in Sesto/Moso is greeted by a sight that seems almost surreal:

Lush meadows with narrow paths winding into the distance, framed by the towering Dolomite peaks. The scenery feels almost like an alpine film set – except that here, everything is real.
The Magic of the Sesto Sundial
One of the most fascinating natural spectacles of the Fiscalina Valley is the Sesto Sundial, arguably the largest sundial in the world. The five prominent peaks – Cima Nove (Neuner), Cima Dieci (Sextner Rotwand), Cima Undici (Elfer), Cima Dodici (Zwölfer), and Cima Una (Einser) – are not only impressive rock formations but actually function like a clock:

As the day progresses, the sun moves precisely over the corresponding peaks, marking the time. It is a natural phenomenon beyond compare, offering an especially impressive spectacle when the skies are clear.
The Silence of the Morning
Those who set out early experience the Fiscalina Valley at its perhaps most beautiful. Morning mist clings to the mountain slopes while the first rays of sunlight bathe the peaks in a soft pink. Your only companion in this silence is the gentle bubbling of the Fischleinbach stream.

This moment is especially impressive in autumn, when the larches wear their golden robes and the crisp air makes the colors appear even more intense.
Along the Fischleinbach Stream
The gentle bubbling sound of the Fischleinbach stream accompanies you from your first step to your last through the valley. Especially in the morning hours, when the air is still cool and clear, the surroundings feel almost mystical.

The steady murmur of the water as it flows between rocks and roots makes this path a place of pure relaxation – a natural meditation that revitalizes both body and mind.
Picnic on an Alpine Meadow
It doesn't always have to be a mountain hut – sometimes a self-packed picnic is the most beautiful moment of a hike. On a sunny alpine meadow, with a view of the steep rock faces of the Dolomites, food tastes twice as good.

Simply sit down, soak up the silence of the mountains, let your gaze wander over the majestic peaks, and let your soul find its peace – this is what true freedom feels like, when time seems to stand still for a moment and nature pushes the stress of daily life far into the distance.
Evening Magic in the Fiscalina Valley
As the sun slowly retreats behind the peaks, a special stillness settles over the valley. The hikers have long since started their journey back, the light bathes the rocks in warm shades of red, and for a brief moment, the valley belongs only to you.

Anyone who experiences this quiet evening magic—as the last rays of sunlight bathe the peaks in golden light and an almost mystical silence settles over the valley—knows: the Fiscalina Valley is not just a hiking destination, but a place that leaves a lasting impression deep in the heart.
