Ski Touring in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites Region

On touring skis, the 3 Zinnen Dolomites region can be experienced in a completely new way. Away from the ski slopes, ski tourers can discover wonderfully secluded and solitary ski tours. Only the crunching snow under the skis and your own breath can be heard in the silence of the almost untouched winter landscape.

The blue sky and the clear mountain air merge with the mountain panoramas of the Dolomites, which are simply at their most imposing in the 3 Zinnen region.

Ski Touring in the Sesto Dolomites and Alta Pusteria

More and more ski tourers are enjoying this sustainable way of climbing the mountain before savoring the descent back down to the valley. Ski tours into the indescribably beautiful nature of Alta Pusteria and the Dolomites are an incomparable experience.

Most ski tours can be combined with a stop at one of the numerous mountain huts and snack stations, which warmly welcome ski tourers, snowshoe hikers, and winter hikers far away from the ski slopes. This turns the winter adventure into a perfect gourmet experience.

Ski Touring - The Most Sustainable Way to Climb Mountains

Ski touring is the perfect winter sport for fans of alpine sports who are also looking for tranquility away from the slopes. You are rewarded for the strenuous ascent with dreamy views and a relaxing peace that can be felt both inside and out. As a ski tourer, however, you do need a certain level of physical fitness. The beauty of it is that you can pace yourself as you wish while ski touring, enjoying nature and the trail at your own pace.

For those who love to enjoy winter nature and want to stay active at the same time, ski touring is just the thing. Alpine schools also offer guided ski tours for those interested in the sport. If you don't have your own equipment with you, you can rent touring skis along with skins, poles, and boots for your next adventure directly from many local ski rentals.

Val Fiscalina - Three Peaks Hut Ski Tour

The Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal) - Three Peaks Hut ski tour is one of, if not the absolute highlight among ski tours in the Three Peaks region. So: strap on your touring skis and let the adventure begin. Your best starting point is the Fischleinbodenhütte, located at the entrance to Val Fiscalina in the Sesto Dolomites. Even within Val Fiscalina itself, dreamy views of various imposing Dolomite peaks unfold before you. At the end of the valley, the Talschlusshütte (Rifugio Fondovalle) beckons, offering a chance to indulge in South Tyrolean specialties & more before the ascent to the Three Peaks Hut.

Skitour Fischleintal

The ascent takes you through the Altenstein Valley (Valle della Rienza), which offers views of the Cima Una (Einserkofel). The high valley below the Sasso di Sesto provides a fantastic panoramic view into the distance. Upon reaching the Three Peaks Hut, the highlight of the ski tour awaits you — the view of the north faces of the Three Peaks.

In winter, the Three Peaks Hut is closed, so be sure to pack provisions for the trip. The return journey follows the same path you took on the way up. After the descent, the food at the Talschlusshütte (Rifugio Fondovalle) tastes twice as good. The Val Fiscalina – Three Peaks Hut ski tour can also be enjoyed as a snowshoe hike or a winter trek.

Sasso di Sesto Ski Tour

The Sasso di Sesto (Sextner Stein) ski tour is considered a classic among ski tours in the Three Peaks region and Alta Pusteria. This tour takes you on a direct route up toward the Three Peaks. The journey begins at Fischleinboden, leads through Val Fiscalina, and passes the end of the valley. Before starting the ascent, you can fuel up at the Talschlusshütte (Rifugio Fondovalle). Please note that the mountain shelters higher up are all closed in winter. The Talschlusshütte delights visitors with its stunning location and excellent cuisine; otherwise, you should make sure to pack enough provisions.

Skitour Fischleintal

The demanding path continues through the picturesquely wild Altenstein Valley. Although the ascent requires good physical fitness, it leads steadily uphill past the Three Peaks Hut, offering views of Mount Paterno (Paternkofel) and ultimately the Three Peaks themselves, which are spectacular at any time of day or season.

At 2,539 meters, the Sasso di Sesto (Sextner Stein) offers a completely different perspective on the giant vertical faces that tower impressively out of the winter snowscape. The journey concludes with a breathtaking descent back down into the beautiful Val Fiscalina (Fischleintal).

Ski Tour to Monte Golfen

Have you ever wondered what lies above the Glinzhof? This ski tour is your chance to find out. The route leads to the ridge of Monte Golfen in Alta Pusteria, located right above us. The starting point is the parking lot at the Kurterhof in Frondeigen (Franadega), situated above Wahlen near Dobbiaco. Starting at 1,650 meters, the trail—which is not difficult to navigate on touring skis—first follows a forest path up to the barren mountain ridge of Monte Golfen in the Silvester Valley (part of Dobbiaco) until you reach the summit cross.

Skitour Fischleintal

At the summit cross, you can enjoy a dreamy panorama of the Dolomites. Haven't had enough of ski touring yet? From Monte Golfen, you can extend your tour further to the Hochhorn (Corno di Fana), situated at 2,623 meters. However, this part of the tour requires a bit more physical fitness and is more demanding. The extra effort is guaranteed to pay off, though. The descent follows parallel to the ascent track back to the starting point.

Prato Piazza - Picco di Vallandro Ski Tour

Prato Piazza (Plätzwiese) in the Braies Valley is a true paradise for ski tourers and cross-country skiers, and not just in winter. Even in summer, this high plateau in the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park is a popular magnet for visitors. The ski tour from Prato Piazza to Picco di Vallandro (Dürrenstein) is considered one of the most beautiful in Alta Pusteria. The tour begins at the Prato Piazza parking lot. Passing the mountain inn and Hotel Hohe Gaisl, trail no. 40 leads you toward the summit of Picco di Vallandro.

Skitour Plätzwiese

Turning left, the trail runs just below the ridge to the sub-peak of the Dürrenstein and then continues through a small notch to the nearby 2,839-meter summit. Here, you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the Braies Dolomites and the Three Peaks. The descent follows the same path as the ascent. Well-conditioned ski tourers can opt for a direct ascent to the Dürrenstein, which is considerably more strenuous. For this route, turn off directly toward the Dürrenstein at the Prato Piazza mountain inn.

Monte Jaufen Ski Tour

Braies (Prags), part of the Alta Pusteria region, is the starting point of this magnificent ski tour leading to one of the most impressive mountains in the Braies Dolomites: the Monte Jaufen (Großer Jaufen). This tour is highly attractive not only for its scenery but also for its technical appeal to ski tourers. The starting point for this tour, which is classified as easy to a maximum of moderately difficult, is the Brückele (Ponticello) Inn in Braies. The forest path leads flat into the valley. To the left of the stream, the trail (marker no. 4) climbs steeply in serpentines, leading you directly up beneath the rock towers.

Skitour Fischleintal

Below the rock towers, the route continues through flat sections and sparse forest toward the Rossalm, located at 2,142 meters. Crossing the saddle below the Kleiner Jaufen, you can now see the Großer Jaufen in the distance. From the 2,480-meter-high summit of Monte Jaufen (Großer Jaufen), you have a magnificent view of Lake Braies. Alternatively, ski tourers can climb both peaks, the Kleiner Jaufen and the Großer Jaufen, during the tour. The route leads back to the starting point along the ascent track.
