The Locatelli Hut in Summer

Worth noting: The Locatelli Hut's opening times almost exactly mirror the summer months. Even though the most famous mountain hut in the Dolomites—and perhaps in all of South Tyrol—attracts an enormous number of visitors during this short time of year, you shouldn't miss the chance for a fantastic view of the Three Peaks from the sun terrace and linger for a moment with a cool refreshment. The magnificent panorama almost makes you forget the hustle and bustle around you.

The Locatelli Hut in Winter

With the start of autumn, the Locatelli Hut begins its winter sleep until it opens its doors again the following year at the start of the summer season. Dining at the Locatelli Hut

Given the panoramic view, you might want to lower your culinary expectations just a bit. Despite the high volume of visitors, the available dishes are quite tasty. However, depending on demand, there may be shortages. One downside: on the large terrace, drinks are served in plastic cups.

9. Auronzo Hut - Starting Point for the Three Peaks Dolomites Nature Park

The Auronzo Hut is a typical mountain refuge of the CAI Alpine Club Auronzo in the Dolomites and is the ideal starting point for hikes in the Three Peaks Nature Park. While the mountain hut may not exude the typical rustic flair of other huts, you can already catch an incomparable panorama of the Three Peaks from here and enjoy delicious cuisine. The Auronzo Hut thus gives people who are less mobile, walking-impaired, or dependent on a wheelchair the opportunity to get closer to the mountain massif than from any other hut. This is the best place to start the 4-hour loop around the Three Peaks with its spectacular views. Other diverse hiking trails and via ferratas, such as those on Mount Paterno or the Torre di Toblin, are also ideal to tackle from here.

Route to the Auronzo Hut

You can easily reach the Auronzo Hut by car or on foot. The driving time from Glinzhof is less than an hour. If you drive from San Candido towards Dobbiaco, turn left onto Strada Statale 51 via Via Monte Piana. Along the way, you can already see magnificent panoramas, including the Three Peaks. From Misurina (toll road), about 7 kilometers before the destination, you reach the Auronzo Hut.

The direct walking distance would be 28.6 kilometers and take a little over 7 hours. If you are actually planning a complete hike to the Auronzo Hut or the Locatelli Hut, starting from Sesto—which is 11 kilometers away from us—is a good option. From there, the path to the Auronzo Hut is 17.6 kilometers, and the distance to the Locatelli Hut is 13.6 kilometers.

A shuttle bus also runs directly to the Auronzo Hut from Dobbiaco, which is only 6 kilometers away from us, to set off into the Three Peaks Nature Park.

The Auronzo Hut in Summer

Due to the altitude and snow conditions, the Auronzo Hut is also only open during the summer months. It is best to check the exact opening hours from year to year before a visit. Located on the south side of the Three Peaks massif, the refuge is the perfect place to start the approximately 4-hour Three Peaks loop hike without having to overcome major differences in altitude.

The Auronzo Hut in Winter

For 9 months of the year, the mountain refuge is closed. During the winter months, the paid toll road leading to the Auronzo Hut is also closed. In winter, the Three Peaks can be explored via a snowshoe tour starting from Sesto through the Fiscalina Valley, away from the tourist crowds and through a magnificent winter landscape.

Dining at the Auronzo Hut

The rustic mountain refuge operated by the Alpine Club Auronzo provides its visitors with dishes from South Tyrol. As a starting point into the Three Peaks Nature Park with a high volume of visitors, the Auronzo Hut scores less with its gastronomy and more with the impressive panoramic view it opens up of the stars of the mountain world: the Three Peaks. However, if you are hungry, you will be quite satisfied with the range of food and its quality.

10. Pian di Cengia Hut – the highest and smallest mountain hut in the Three Peaks Nature Park

Last but not least – we don't want to keep the Pian di Cengia Hut (Büllelejochhütte) from you. Many huts in the Three Peaks region, such as the Lavaredo Hut or the Comici Hut (Zsigmondyhütte), deserve to be introduced in more detail. However, this small but exquisite mountain refuge in the heart of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Sesto Dolomites, with its extraordinary location, simply must be in our Top 10 huts and snack stations! Surrounded by the mountain peaks of the Sesto Sundial, between the Croda dei Toni (Zwölfer) and Cima Una (Einser) and opposite the Cima Dieci (Zehner) and Cima Undici (Elfer), it sits high up in the middle of this natural timepiece – so close to heaven.

Route to the Pian di Cengia Hut

For die-hard hikers and climbers, the Pian di Cengia Hut can also be reached on foot from Glinzhof in about 6 hours and over a distance of 23.4 kilometers. However, the ascent can be shortened. Several climbing options will bring you to this dream destination.

The shortest route, though with the longest drive, is via the Auronzo Hut. From the Auronzo Hut, you can ascend via the Lavaredo Hut (path no. 104) to the Pian di Cengia Hut or choose the path via the Lavaredo and Locatelli Huts (paths no. 104 / no. 101). Combining both paths results in a magnificent circular route.

Alternatively, you can reach the Pian di Cengia Hut from Sesto and the beautiful Fiscalina Valley via the Comici Hut (paths no. 103 / no. 101) or via the Locatelli Hut (paths no. 102 / no. 101) with great views. This route is known as the Sesto Hut Tour. You can also reach the highest-situated refuge via the beautiful Innerfeldtal through the Tre Scarperi and Locatelli Huts. All these paths can be wonderfully combined with one hut or another. The best place to park is at the Fischleinbodenhütte.

If you prefer it lonely and a bit wilder, you can also take path no. 107 from the south, starting from Val Marzon via the Cengia Valley, which leads steeply in hairpin bends up to the Rossleiten and then takes you further on path no. 104 to the Pian di Cengia Hut. More detailed descriptions can be found on the website of this small but fine mountain refuge.

The Pian di Cengia Hut in Summer

The opening hours of the Pian di Cengia Hut are limited to the summer. The hut remains closed from the beginning of October and only opens again at the beginning of June. The Sesto Hut Tour is an absolute must and an unforgettable experience for hikers, even without extensive mountain knowledge. This is pure Dolomites feeling. The round trip takes about 8 hours, depending on your fitness level. The circular tour starts from Sesto through the Fiscalina Valley. It continues to the Fondovalle Hut at 1,548 meters, to the Comici Hut at 2,224 meters, and then up to the Pian di Cengia Hut at 2,528 meters. The loop leads you further to the Locatelli Hut at 2,405 meters and back to the starting point.
