Lake Braies: A natural wonder straight out of a picture book
What makes Lake Braies so special? It is above all the incredible play of colors of the water. Depending on the time of day, sunlight, and season, the surface changes its color from a deep, mystical fir green to a radiant, Caribbean turquoise blue. The water is crystal clear and ice-cold, fed by underground springs and the snowmelt from the surrounding peaks.
Mount Seekofel: Stone Guardian in the Water's Reflection
The mighty Seekofel – Sas dla Biesces in Ladin – forms the dramatic backdrop for this natural spectacle. With its proud height of 2,810 meters, the gigantic rock face majestically towers like a stone guardian at the southern end of the lake, lending the valley its unmistakable, wild soul.

When the conditions are perfect in the morning, the first sun gently climbs over the walls, and not a breath of wind ripples the water's surface, the true wonder of Lake Braies unfolds: The massive limestone wall of the mountain reflects so crystal clear and razor-sharp in the deep blue water that reality and reflection seem to merge seamlessly.
This fascinating symmetry creates an almost magical optical illusion – top and bottom merge into a single work of natural art. The stark contrast between the pale, sun-baked dolomite rock of the massif, the deep green of the ancient spruce forests on the slopes, and the vibrant turquoise of the water turns every viewpoint into a living painting.
The Gate to the Underworld: The Mystic Legend of the Lake
However, the lake captivates not only with its physical beauty but also with its aura, deeply rooted in South Tyrolean folklore. In Ladin mythology, the southern end of Lake Braies – precisely where the Seekofel mountain rises – is considered the legendary gate to the underworld.

The legend tells of the proud but fallen realm of Fanes. It is whispered that the last survivors of this once mighty people sleep deep within the mountains in hidden caves. Only every hundred years, on a moonlit night, a boat is said to glide across Lake Braies, carrying the Queen of Fanes and her daughter Dolasilla, in silent hope for the rebirth of their kingdom.
Those who stand on the shore early in the morning, when the fine mists still dance over the water, can almost physically feel the mystique of these ancient tales.
The Perfect Start: From Glinzhof to Lake Braies
A trip to Lake Braies can be a logistical challenge, especially in the summer months – if you're unprepared. But this is precisely where the true luxury of your holiday at Glinzhof begins.
While others queue up in car lines early in the morning, hoping for one of the strictly limited parking spaces, your day begins completely relaxed on our sun terrace high above Innichen.

From the Breakfast Table Directly onto the E-Bike
After a hearty farmhouse breakfast with fresh products directly from our farm, fresh mountain air in your nose, and a view of the Sesto Dolomites, you start your adventure in the smartest and most beautiful way possible: with an e-bike.
Instead of getting into the car, simply grab one of our well-maintained e-bikes from our in-house rental service.
With Electric Tailwind Through the Puster Valley
From Glinzhof, you roll leisurely down into the valley and combine the trip to the lake directly with a wonderful panoramic tour through the Puster Valley. With electric tailwind, the journey becomes not a stressful chore, but the first highlight of your day.
You breathe in the scent of the coniferous forests, ride past lush meadows, and reach the lake relaxed, warmed up, and with a smile on your face.

Stress-Free to Your Destination: Your Journey to Lake Braies
When a place is of such unearthly beauty, it naturally doesn't remain a secret for long. Lake Braies, alongside the Three Peaks, is the absolute flagship of the Dolomites and attracts visitors from all over the world, especially in the summer months.
But where many people want to go, intelligent solutions are needed to protect the sensitive Alpine nature – and this is precisely where the excursion plans of unprepared guests often fail. But don't worry: as Glinzhof guests, you have a clear advantage.
The "Prags Plan" and why the car can stay at the Glinzhof: To preserve the ecosystem of the Braies Valley and prevent traffic chaos, the local administration has introduced a strict but necessary regulatory system.
During the peak summer months (usually from early July to mid-September), the Braies Valley is completely closed to private motorized traffic during the day – generally between 09:30 AM and 04:00 PM. Anyone wishing to travel by their own car during this time must reserve a ticket including a parking space online in advance.
If these coveted quotas are exhausted, the barrier at the valley entrance remains mercilessly closed. Spontaneous excursions by car are therefore almost impossible during peak season, and the parking fees directly at the lake are substantial.
Precisely for this reason, our most important tip for your stay is: Simply leave your car in our free parking lot at the Glinzhof. You not only save yourself the nerve-wracking hunt for online tickets and expensive parking spaces, but you also transform the mere "arrival" into a fantastic discovery tour.
Pure Freedom: To Lake Braies with a Glinzhof E-Bike
We already revealed it at the beginning: The e-bike is the absolute VIP pass for Lake Braies. Bicycles are exempt from traffic restrictions! You can cycle relaxed past any car queues and checkpoints, enjoy the landscape at your own pace, and park your bike completely free of charge directly at the lakeshore.
Here's what your e-bike route from Glinzhof to Lake Braies looks like:
The ride from Glinzhof (located at approx. 1,500 meters) to Lake Braies (1,496 meters) is a wonderful half-day tour with our e-bikes, easily manageable for anyone who is physically active. For the route of about 20 to 25 kilometers (depending on the exact route choice), you should plan a leisurely 1.5 to 2 hours each way.

- Stage 1: The Descent into the Valley. After a hearty breakfast, you'll hop on your bikes at our farm. The first few kilometers are pure enjoyment: you'll roll down the well-maintained panoramic road into the historic center of Innichen. The fresh morning air awakens your spirits, and the view of the Haunold massif accompanies you all the way into the valley.
- Stage 2: The Pustertal Cycle Path. Once you've reached the bottom, you'll comfortably join the Pustertal Cycle Path. This excellently developed and signposted cycle path leads you downstream along the young Rienz river. You'll ride across gentle meadows, through shady woods, and past the Toblach Field towards Niederdorf. The gentle pedal assistance of your e-bikes will make you feel like you're gliding over the gravel and asphalt ground.
- Stage 3: The Wild Pragsertal. Between Niederdorf and Welsberg, you'll finally turn off into the Pragsertal. This is where the real mountain adventure begins. The valley narrows, the rock faces draw closer together, and the road begins to noticeably climb. What would be a strenuous climb with a normal mountain bike will only make you smile on an e-bike. You simply switch to a higher assistance level and playfully climb the mountain. Past the charming hamlets of Schmieden and St. Veit, ever deeper into the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park.
- The Grand Finale: The last kilometers lead through a dense coniferous forest. You'll smell the resinous wood, feel the air become noticeably cooler and more alpine, and suddenly the forest opens up. There it is before you: Lake Braies, glittering in the morning sun, flanked by the white rock faces of the Seekofel. A moment that guarantees goosebumps.
Alternatives: Relaxed Travel by Bus and Train
Should the weather not be cycling-friendly or if you simply fancy a day without sporting activity, there are, of course, excellent public transport alternatives from Glinzhof. Logistics are perfectly organized thanks to South Tyrol's local transport system.
As our guests at Glinzhof, you will receive the Südtirol Guest Pass for the duration of your stay. This card is your free travel ticket for almost all public transport throughout South Tyrol. With it, you can comfortably board the Pustertalbahn at Innichen station, which will take you completely free of charge and in just a few minutes to Niederdorf.

Directly at Niederdorf station, shuttle bus line 442 will be waiting to take you directly to the large forecourt of Lake Braies without any further stops. However, an important detail must be noted here:
To regulate the enormous influx of visitors in midsummer, travel on this special shuttle bus (line 442) during high season (usually from early July to mid-September) is not included in the Südtirol Guest Pass.
- Mandatory advance reservation: During this period, you must book and pay for your bus ticket for the shuttle online in advance.
- Strict limitation: The number of seats on the bus is precisely counted. Anyone who spontaneously shows up at the stop without an online ticket will unfortunately not be allowed to board, even if there appear to be standing places available.
Tip from the Glinzhof team: Don't stress about the organization! When planning your trip to Lake Braies, simply come to our reception in good time. We will be happy to explain the booking portal at prags.bz and help you with the reservation of your shuttle tickets. This way, you can plan your day at the lake perfectly and without any unpleasant surprises.

Highlights on the way to Lake Braies
The path from Glinzhof to Lake Braies is by no means just travel time. No matter whether you cover the distance sportily with our e-bikes on the Puster Valley Cycle Path, use the train, or drive by car in spring/autumn.
Along the route, historical cultural treasures, refreshing oases, and fascinating natural phenomena await discovery.
Glinzhof Tip: Deliberately take an extra hour for the outward or return journey for such small discoveries. Especially the combination of culture, the refreshing Kneipp break in Niederdorf, and the panoramic views along the route makes the trip to Lake Braies a thoroughly successful day adventure!
Niederdorf Spa Park: The Freshness Kick for E-Bikers
Directly on the route of the Puster Valley Cycle Path, shortly before you turn off into the Pragsertal, lies the idyllic village of Niederdorf. It is considered the cradle of tourism in the Puster Valley and is home to a real highlight for active holidaymakers: the approximately 5-hectare spa park.
Niederdorf is South Tyrol's first certified Kneipp experience village. The spacious Kneipp facility amidst greenery is perfect for a short break on your e-bike:
- Leg Regeneration: Take off your shoes and pour ice-cold, pure mountain water over your calves. This stimulates circulation, instantly refreshes tired muscles, and gives you the perfect energy for the remaining kilometers up to the lake.
- Oasis of Calm: The park offers lovingly designed ponds, an open-air inhalatorium for the respiratory tract, and a botanical nature trail.
The Toblach Field: Where Water Chooses its Paths
On the route between Innichen and Niederdorf, you cross an inconspicuous but geographically fascinating threshold: the Toblach Field. Here lies the European main watershed between the Adriatic Sea and the Black Sea.
- Two Rivers, Two Seas: Precisely at this point, the waters diverge. While the Rienz flows west and eventually empties into the Adriatic Sea via the Eisack and Etsch, the Drau originates nearby, flowing east and reaching the Black Sea via the Danube.
- Culture Tip: If you love culture, take a small detour to the historic Grand Hotel Toblach or visit Gustav Mahler's hidden composing hut in the Toblach Wildlife Park, where the world-famous composer put his great symphonies to paper during the summer months.
Innichen Collegiate Church & Three Peaks Nature Park House
Before you set off from Glinzhof or when you return from your tour, it's worth taking a closer look at your starting point, Innichen. The historic town captivates with its alpine charm and two significant sights:
- The Innichen Collegiate Church: It is considered the most significant Romanesque sacred building in the Eastern Alps. The mighty portal, the impressive frescoes, and the mystical crypt partly date back to the 12th century and tell of the long, eventful history of the Puster Valley.
- Three Peaks Nature Park House: Housed directly in the old workshop wing of the Grand Hotel, the Nature Park House offers fascinating insights into the geology of the Dolomites, the construction of the mountain front in World War I, and the flora and fauna of the UNESCO World Heritage site. A fantastic stopover – especially for families or on slightly cloudy days.
Detour to Welsberg Castle: Medieval Guard at the Valley Entrance
If you want to make a short cultural detour before the final turn-off into the Braies Valley, plan a small side trip to Welsberg. Just a few minutes from the main route, the proud Welsberg Castle complex sits majestically on a steep rock outcrop. The 12th-century fortress, with its exceptionally tall, slender keep, rises far above the treetops.
- Photo Stop & Time Travel: Even from the paths around the castle hill, you have a fantastic view of the historic defensive complex. In summer, the thick walls come to life when concerts and art exhibitions take place in the romantic inner courtyard.
- Break on the Way Back: Should you still have some energy left on your way back from Lake Braies, this detour is particularly worthwhile: The small circular path around the castle rock invites you to a shady stroll, where you can relax and soak in the medieval flair.

In the Middle of a Postcard Motif: Your Nature Experience at Lake Braies
After you have conveniently and freely parked your e-bike from Glinzhof on the shore or comfortably stepped out of the shuttle bus, only a few steps separate you from the actual highlight. Even as you approach through the sparse mountain forest, it flashes between the tree trunks: that unreal, luminous emerald green and turquoise blue for which the lake is world-famous.
Lake Braies is not a place you simply "check off." It is a natural backdrop you must immerse yourself in, hike through, and experience from different perspectives. Here are the absolute must-dos for your day by the water.
The Classic Lake Circular Path: Step by Step into Awe
The best way to get to know Lake Braies in all its facets is the circular path that hugs the shoreline. With a length of about 3.5 kilometers and very little elevation gain, this hike is more of an extended, leisurely stroll.
The pure walking time is about 1.5 hours – however, we recommend planning at least two to three hours, as you will guaranteed want to stop at every other bend to enjoy the view.

- Starting on the North Shore: Most visitors begin their circuit at the traditional Hotel Pragser Wildsee, which majestically thrones on the north shore. We recommend circling the lake counter-clockwise. This way, you start relaxed on the flat west shore and save the spectacular rock path on the east shore as a highlight for the second half.
- The Flat West Shore: The first half of the path on the western side is wide, largely flat, and even suitable for all-terrain strollers. The path sometimes leads directly along the shimmering water, sometimes through shady, fragrant spruce forests. From here, you have a fantastic view of the boathouse on the opposite side and can observe how the play of light on the water changes with every meter.
- The Beaches in the South: At the southern end of the lake, directly at the foot of the gigantic Seekofel, the landscape opens up. Wide, white pebble beaches have formed here. The water here is particularly shallow and glows a bright Caribbean blue in the sunshine. This is the perfect place to take off your hiking boots for a moment, dip your feet into the (admittedly very refreshing!) water, and enjoy a small picnic with the delicacies from your Glinzhof breakfast.
- The Spectacular East Shore: The return via the east shore requires a bit more sure-footedness but offers the most dramatic views. The path here is literally carved into the steep rock face. Over secured wooden steps and small stairs, you hike high above the lake. From this elevated perspective, you look deep down into the crystal-clear water and, with a bit of luck, can even see the trout swimming, seemingly weightless in the turquoise element.
Tip for Hiking Enthusiasts: Detour to Grünwaldalm
At the southern lakeshore, the hiking trail gently branches off into the idyllic Grünwaldtal valley. Along a mountain stream, this easy route leads in about 45 minutes (1.5 km) through shady coniferous forest to the rustic Grünwaldalm at 1,590 meters – perfect for families and leisurely hikers who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the main shore.

- Authentic Alpine Culture: On the sun terrace, traditional South Tyrolean "Brettljausen" (platter snacks), "Kaminwurzen" (smoked sausages), or homemade "Kaiserschmarrn" (shredded pancake) await you.
- Peace & Relaxation: The expansive alpine meadows offer plenty of space to breathe deeply before returning to the lake via the same path.
Pure Romance: A Ride in the Nostalgic Wooden Boats
What would a visit to Lake Braies be without having quietly glided across its waters? The historic boathouse ("La Palafitta"), perched on thick wooden stilts directly over the water, is arguably the most famous photo motif in the Dolomites.
Here you can rent one of the handcrafted, nostalgic wooden boats. On Lake Braies, there are no motors, no noise, and no rush – pure muscle power is required at the oars. Once you've reached the middle of the lake with your boat, put the oars aside for a moment. Just let yourself drift. Surrounded by the steep, white rock faces of the Seekofel, with the gentle lapping of the water against the wooden bow, you feel incredibly small and very close to nature.

Glinzhof Note: The boats can usually be rented from mid-May to the end of October (mostly from 09:00 AM). Unfortunately, reservations are not possible, so the "first come, first served" principle applies. Those who arrive early in the morning as one of the first not only secure a boat immediately but also enjoy the absolute tranquility on the water.
Hunting for the perfect photo: Spots and times of day
Lake Braies is a paradise for photographers. But if you want to take the perfect picture home, you should follow a few small rules:

- The magic of early morning: The absolute best time for the lake is early morning. Only when the first sunbeams kiss the mountain peaks and the wind is completely still, is the water surface mirror-smooth. Only then will you get the perfect, razor-sharp reflection of the Seekofel in the lake. In addition, fine wisps of mist sometimes appear, giving the lake a mystical, almost fairy-tale aura.
- Showcasing the boathouse: The jetty to the boathouse is the classic motif. From the small paths to the left and right of the main entrance, you have wonderful angles to capture the wooden boats against the mighty mountain backdrop.
- The bird's-eye view from the east bank: If you hike along the east bank via the stairs carved into the rock, look out for small viewing bays. From up here, you can take breathtaking pictures that magnificently capture the infinite depths and various shades of blue of the lake.
- The late afternoon light: For those who prefer to linger longer at the Glinzhof breakfast buffet in the morning, late afternoon is the second golden choice. From 4:00 PM, the Braies Valley noticeably empties. The light becomes softer, the shadows of the mountains slowly move across the water, and you can enjoy the romantic evening atmosphere.

Lake Braies through the seasons
Lake Braies is not purely a summer destination. Its fascination changes with the months, giving the Hochpustertal a completely new character at any time.
Those lucky enough to visit us at Glinzhof more often or during different seasons will get to know the many faces of this natural icon.
Spring (May to June): The awakening of the mountain world
When the snow on the steep walls of the Seekofel slowly melts in late spring, nature around the lake awakens with immense power. The streams carry abundant crystal-clear water, and the lake's water level reaches its annual peak. The water glows in a particularly deep, clear green. During this time, the meadows in the Grünwaldtal also come to life, covering the slopes with colorful alpine flowers. Spring is ideal for those who want to enjoy the natural spectacle in absolute tranquility, as the really large crowds of visitors are yet to arrive.
Summer (July to August): Radiant Turquoise & pure zest for life
In midsummer, Lake Braies shows its most colorful side. The sun's rays now hit the water surface at the perfect angle, making the lake glow in its famous Caribbean turquoise. It's the time for rowing boats, extended picnics on the shore, and refreshing e-bike tours from Glinzhof. Those who want to spend the summer at the lake should best use the early morning hours or late afternoon to experience the magical tranquility on the water without haste.
Autumn (September to November): The golden natural spectacle
As the days shorten and temperatures rise, the Braies Valley transforms into a sea of vibrant colors. The dense larch forests around the shore turn into strong gold and orange hues. Since the wind often completely rests in autumn, the burning colors of the trees and the pale rocks of the Seekofel are reflected razor-sharp on the mirror-smooth water. Autumn also offers the best long-distance visibility of the year – ideal conditions for photographers and leisurely hikers who appreciate the clear mountain air.
Winter (December to April): The Snowy Winter Dream
When Father Frost arrives, a deep, almost reverent silence settles over Lake Braies. The thick layer of ice transforms the water into a glittering surface, framed by deeply snow-covered spruces and majestic ice cascades on the rock faces. The lake circular path turns into an atmospheric winter hiking trail. After a day in the deep winter sports romance, our guests are particularly quick to return to the warmth of the Glinzhof to end the snowy day with steaming tea.

Relaxed and Charged: Charging Infrastructure & Battery Tips for On the Go
With the powerful batteries of our in-house Glinzhof e-bikes, you generally don't have to worry about range on the route from Innichen to Lake Braies and back (approx. 35–45 kilometers, depending on the variant).
Should you nevertheless run out of power on the way or plan for additional elevation gain, the charging infrastructure along the route is well developed.
- Start with 100% green electricity: You start at Glinzhof with a fully charged battery, which was directly powered by green solar energy from our own photovoltaic system.
- Charging stations in Pustertal: Along the Pustertal cycle path, the town centers and cafés in Niederdorf (e.g., at the spa park) and Welsberg offer practical public e-bike charging stations.
- Stop & Charge at the lake: Both the guesthouses at the entrance to the Braies Valley and the establishments directly at Lake Braies and on the Grünwaldalm are happy to provide cyclists with a power outlet when they make a purchase.
- Practical tip: Simply pack your compact charging cable in your backpack. While you enjoy a traditional South Tyrolean "Marende" (snack), your e-bike can quickly gain valuable range for the return journey to Innichen using a Schuko plug.
